Eduard Folayang headlined the most watched MMA show in Philippine history
Reigning ONE lightweight champion Eduard Folayang was the top bill of a record-breaking show in Manila
ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY took place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila last month, and featured Eduard Folayang making a successful defense of his ONE Lightweight World Championship in front of a roaring Mall of Asia Arena.
Those in attendance included multiple-time boxing world champion and Philippine senator Manny Pacquiao, who personally placed the belt around Folayang’s waist following his victory.
The event was broadcast live in the Philippines on S+A channel 23, and figures released by Nielsen show it captured a record-breaking share of the domestic TV audience.
ONE Championship chairman Chatri Sityodtong outlined how successful the telecast was, stating: “Numbers don't lie. We broke all records with a 26 per cent peak TV ratings share as per Nielsen. Those numbers are massive. It means one in four Filipinos who were watching TV were watching ONE Championship.
“For perspective, last year, the UFC's biggest show (McGregor vs Alvarez) did a roughly 6 to 7 per cent ratings share in the Philippines.”
It is part of a pattern that has seen every audience metric for ONE Championship increase exponentially, in addition to rising broadcast ratings. For instance, an infographic released by the organization recently showed that its online video views are projected to surpass 314 million, as compared to 312,000 three years ago. That is a staggering 1000-fold increase.
ONE Championship has also helped to put Filipino fighters on the international map. Folayang currently holds the organization’s Lightweight World Championship, and has a huge fan following in the Philippines after having fought 11 times for the promotion, and beaten some of the best fighters in the world.
Other Filipino stars on the roster include Joshua Pacio, Kevin Belingon, Honorio Banario, and Mark Striegl while Fil-Am heavyweight Brandon Vera is the organization’s reigning Heavyweight World Champion.
Later this month, flyweight Geje Eusatquio will be in action at ONE: DYNASTY OF HEROES in Singapore on 26 May.
