Behind every world champion is a world champion mom
"Yung persistence niya, yung diligence niya talaga to do her part, yung role niya as a mother, 100 percent na nagawa niya yun sa aming lahat, kaya I'm so proud of her." - Eduard Folayang (Photo courtesy of ONE Championship)

These days, Eduard "The Landslide" Folayang is on top of the world.

With the ONE Championship lightwieght title around his waist, the Team Lakay superstar is reaping the benfits of his years of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears.

That wasn't always the case, however.

While we've come to see the valleys and the peaks of Folayang's career, adversity has been around Folayang way before he found martial arts.

Folayang was one of nine children, and he's also one of only four of those children to survive.

Times were hard, but as fighters do, Folayang and his family fought and overcame.

On the forefront of that battle to survive were Folayang's parents, especially his mother Mercedes.

"Yung mother ko, very strong, talagang kahit pagod na 'yan, talagang may natitira pa ring energy para sa aming mga anak niya," Folayang told ABS-CBN Sports. "Yung persistence niya, yung diligence niya talaga to do her part, yung role niya as a mother, 100 percent na nagawa niya yun sa aming lahat, kaya I'm so proud of her."

(My mom is a very strong person. Even if she's already tired, she always has enough energy left for us, her children. Her persistence, her diligence to do her part and her role as a mother, she was able to do one hundred percent for all of us, that's why I'm so proud of her.)

Now, the champion hopes to be able to return the favor.

"Syempre yung plano ko kay mama, as much as possible, maging provider din sa mga needs niya, she provides for us, bata pa lang kami, talagang iginapang niya kami, kaya yun din yung gusto ko."

(My plan is to be  a provider for all her needs as much as possible. She provided for us, she made ends meet when we were kids, that's why I want to do the same for her now.)

"On this mother's day, we will celebrate together and that's the best thing, to celebrate as a family." Folayang added.

If it wasn't for mommy Mercedes, there would be no Eduard Folayang, and for that, the champion is beyond grateful.

"I'm so much thankful, Mama, for the things you have done in our lives. Salamat at mahal na mahal kita!"

(Mom, I'm so thankful for the things you've done in our lives. Thank you, and I love you so much!)

Now, Eduard has another mommy in his life, as last March, he and his wife Gen welcomed a bouncing baby girl named Yeshuareigns.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there! You are our world champions!
