The mixed martial arts world mourned the loss of one of their own, Sunday, when headlines broke that Filipino ONE Championship fighter Rocky Batolbatol had passed away after being involved in an accident in his hometown of Cagayan de Oro.
Batolbatol, 32, was supposed to fight on ONE Championship's inaugural event in Surabaya, Indonesia, but the event ended up being postponed due to logistical issues.
Details surrounding Batolbatol's tragic death has surfaced, revealing that he and his cousin, Geinar Ponce, were travelling on-foot along Gusa Highway when they were 'accidentally bumped' by a taxi being driven by Jerson Bersabal, according to the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office.
In a morbid twist of fate, the incident happened right in front of the Capitol University Medical Hospital, a private hospital, but the Batolbatol and Ponce were instead taken to the J.R. Borja public hospital which was reportedly over five kilometers away.
Batolbatol and Ponce were both declared Dead on Arrival.
Batolbatol amassed a 5-3 professional record over his six-year MMA career. He last saw action back in May of 2016 in a loss to Christian Lee.
We here at ABS-CBN Sports are one in mourning the loss of Rocky Batolbatol, and would like to extend our prayers and sympathy to his family, friends, and loved ones.
