"Dito lang, first time ko na may interview, tapos may nag-picture picture, may nag-vivideo, first time ko talaga." - Filipina ONE Championship fighter Jomary Torres
"Wag kang kabahan, Pilipino tayo lahat dito!"
A member from the media encouraged Filipina fighter Jomary Torres as she was fielding questions from the Filipino contingent in Macau.
Torres couldn't get rid of her nerves, and no one can blame the Catalan Fighting Systems product. Set to make her ONE Championship debut at the CotaiArena in Macau on Saturday, the Filipina was thrust into the spotlight at the kickoff press conference as she shared the stage with the likes main eventers and ONE world champions Bibiano Fernandes and Kairat Akhmetov.
With just one professional fight under her belt, the press conference and the media attention was a whole new experience for the 21-year old.
"Hindi ko ‘to inaasahan, kasi sa Pilipinas wala kasing ganito." Jomary said with nervous laughter. "Dito lang, first time ko na may interview, tapos may nag-picture picture, may nag-vivideo, first time ko talaga."
Before signing with ONE Championship, Torres fought under the URCC banner, winning earning a unanimous decision win over Krisna Lindaga.
Now, Torres finds herself on one of the biggest ONE Championship cards of the year, in one of the biggest venues in Asia, against arguably the face of women's mixed martial arts in Thailand.
"Hindi ko inaasahan na ganito kalaki." Torres said following the presser at the Venetian Macau.
"Hindi ko alam kung kinakabahan or masaya, andun na lahat. Medyo kinakabahan kasi andito kayo, nag-iinterview."
When the cage door closes however, Torres says that it's all business. She'll be taking on Thai-Japanese Rika Ishige, who's unbeaten in her first two fights.
"Tingin ko kay Rika, kayang-kaya." Torres said.
If Torres can find a way to impressively halt Ishige's momentum on fight night this Saturday, then the soft-spoken Filipina will need to get used to all the media attention, because she could be getting a whole lot more of it.
Torres will be following in the footsteps of Team Lakay's Gina Iniong and April Osenio, as well as Fil-Aussie Natalie Gonzales Hills, all of whom have represented the Philippines in the ONE Championship cage.
