Quick turnaround for Team Lakay's Gina Iniong as the steps in to face Mei Yamaguchi in Singapore.
Just two weeks after her impressive win at ONE: Legends of the World in Manila, Team Lakay atomweight contender Gina 'Conviction' Iniong will be stepping back into the ONE Championship cage, as she steps in to face Japan's Mei "VV" Yamaguchi at ONE: Immortal Pursuit in Singapore.
Originally scheduled for a rematch against reigning ONE atomweight world champion Angela Lee, Yamaguchi was left without an opponent after Lee was concussed in a car accident in just weeks before fight night.
After her performance in Manila, it was revealed that Iniong had been offered to step in on two weeks notice for a rematch with Yamaguchi.
It will be the second time that Iniong and Yamaguchi share the cage, as they've faced off before, in a PXC event back in 2014, with Iniong taking the split decision win.
“Facing Mei Yamaguchi three years ago was like going through the eye of a needle. That bout opened doors of great opportunity for me in this sport." Iniong said, via ONE Championship. "I am expecting a tough duel with her again on 24 November in Singapore. I have lofty goals in ONE Championship, and I must win this match to achieve them.”
Iniong is unbeaten in two fights under the ONE Championship banner, and a win over Yamaguchi could skyrocket her to number one contender status.
Yamaguchi on the other hand, will look to cement her spot as the rightful challenger to Lee's atomweight crown.
The Japanese women's MMA veteran commended her Filipino counterpart for accepting the fight on short notice.
“I commend Gina Iniong for taking this match on a short notice. She is a good martial arts artist with promising potential in the division. Gina is in good hands, training with no less than the best at Team Lakay. I have faced her before, and she is always in good condition. As always, I am in tiptop shape for every bout. Brace yourselves for fireworks.”
No doubt, Yamaguchi will try to avenge her 2014 loss to Iniong.
ONE Championship: Immortal Pursuit takes place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday, November 24th.
