Filipina fighter Gina 'Conviction' Iniong could not repeat history, as she came up on the losing end of a unanimous decision to top contender Mei 'VV' Yamaguchi at ONE: Immortal Pursuit, Friday evening at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
A rematch of their 2014 bout which saw Iniong take the split decision win, Yamaguchi made sure that the results were different this time around.
Yamaguchi utilized her strong ground game to shut down Iniong's superior striking, controlling the Pinay on the ground.
Iniong had her moments, stuffing a few of Yamaguchi's takedowns, but the former world title contender ultimately found a way to get into dominant position each time.
In the final round, Yamaguchi was the more active fighter, beating Iniong to the punch on the feet before eventually getting the Team Lakay standout to the ground.
Iniong managed to escape towards the end of the final round, but couldn't find the knockout or land any significant damage to sway the decision.
After three rounds, Yamaguchi avenged her loss to Iniong, coming away with a unanimous decision win and cementing her spot as the top contender in the ONE Championship atomweight division.
During the post-fight interview, Yamaguchi made it clear who she wanted to fight next.
"Angela Lee. I need to avenge that loss too." Yamaguchi said, referring to their title bout back in 2016.
Yamaguchi improves to 17-10-1 in her MMA career, while Iniong falls to 6-3 after suffering her first loss under the ONE banner.
