April Osenio put school first before MMA career
“Naging motiovation ko is mga senior ko sa Team Lakay. Lahat sila may degree, kaya napaisip ako na kailangan ko ring magka-degree.”

It’s been over a year since we last saw Team Lakay strawweight contender April Osenio inside the ONE Championship cage.

After her loss to Jenny Huang back in December of 2016, Osenio took time off to focus on something that, in the long run, could possibly be more important than her MMA career: a college degree.

Just like teammates Joshua Pacio and Danny Kingad, Osenio has been balancing life as a college student and a professional mixed martial artist, but in 2107, the 23-year old put her MMA career in the back seat and worked on her Criminology degree at the University of the Cordilleras in Baguio City.

April maintains however that even though she was busy with school, her training was continuous.

“Tuloy-tuloy kasi aral, training, aral, training except dun sa last three months kasi nagfocus ako sa OJT kaya nabakante ako.”

(It’s been school-training-school-training, except for the last three months because I focused on my OJT, that’s why I got vacant.)

School-before-career isn’t always the case for a lot of professional athletes, and for Osenio, the motivation to get a degree came from her Team Lakay seniors like former ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang and flyweight contender Geje Eustaquio.

“Naging motiovation ko is mga senior ko sa Team Lakay.” April shared. “Lahat sila may degree, kaya napaisip ako na kailangan ko ring magka-degree.”

“Kung di ka na matuloy sa paglaban, may sasalo sa yo.”

(My seniors at Team Lakay became my motivation. All of them have degrees, so I thought to myself that I should get a degree too. If ever my fight career doesn’t pan out, at least I have something to fall back on.)

Now that she’s done with school, Osenio can focus back on kicking butt inside the ONE cage, and on Saturday night at ONE: Warriors of the World in Bangkok, she makes her long-awaited return against Chinese newcomer Xiong Jing Nan.

Looking to bounce back from her loss last year, Osenio says that she’s ready.

“Para sa akin, pinaghandaan ko talaga ito kasi this is my career, and I should take good care of it.”

(I really prepared for this because this is my career, and I should take good care of it.)

April Osenio makes her return to the cage against newcomer Xiong Jing Nan at ONE Championship: Warriors of the World, Saturday, December 9th at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
