April Osenio looking to end Team Lakay's 2017 on a high note
"Mag-end na yung taon kaya kailangan ko din kumayod.”

Team Lakay's last three outings inside the ONE Championship cage didn't quite go the way they would have liked.

Last month in Manila, Danny Kingad was submitted by reigning and defending flyweight world champion Adriano Moraes in the first round, while Eduard Folayang dropped the lightweight world championship to Martin Nguyen after being on the wrong end of a flash knockout.

Two weeks later, Gina Iniong, who accepted a fight against top atomweight Mei Yamaguchi on short notice, was on the losing end of a unanimous decision in Singapore.

While all these losses are no doubt learning experiences for the famed Baguio-based stable, a win inside the ONE cage to end the year would definitely help give them some momentum for 2018.

Hoping to be able to get that year-ending win is returning strawweight contender April Osenio.

After taking a year off to finish her studies, Osenio makes her way back to the ONE cage to welcome promotional newcomer Xiong Jin Nan of China at ONE: Warriors of the World in Bangkok.

Osenio admits that there’s a bit of pressure on her part to put Team Lakay back on the win column in ONE Championship.

“Meron din, kasi yung nangyari kila coach Eduard, kila Gina, mag-end na yung taon kaya kailangan ko din kumayod.”

(Yes, there’s a bit because of what happened to coach Eduard and Gina. The year’s ending, so I need to work too.)

On fight night, Osenio will be sharing the cage with a striker with a 9-1 record in Xiong, and says that she’s got no problem going toe-to-toe with the ONE rookie.

“Yung strength nya is striking. Sa akin, yung base ko is striking kaya doon din ako sa striking.”

(Her strength is striking. My base is striking, so that’s what I’ll go with.)

Aside from getting Team Lakay back on track, April also tries to bounce back from her last ONE outing, a submission loss to former title contender Jenny Huang.

Osenio says that she's addressed what needed to be addressed from that loss, her first inside the ONE cage.

“Last game ko, kailangan ko talaga i-improve yung grounds ko kasi doon [ako natalo].”

(From my last fight, I really needed to improve my ground game, because that’s where I lost.)

April Osenio makes her return to the cage against newcomer Xiong Jing Nan at ONE Championship: Warriors of the World, Saturday, December 9th at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
