'Ang Pilipino malakas sumuntok' - Rome Trinidad tries to be the second Pinay to take down Rika Ishige
"Alam natin kapag mga Filipino, ano tayo sa suntok diba, malakas tayo sumuntok, so pwede ko magamit yung striking skills ko sa laban.”
The Rome Trinidad - Rika Ishige fight in Bangkok this Saturday could be a bit of history repeating itself.
Back in August, Ishige, a fan favorite and one of ONE Championship's up-and-coming stars, took on promotional newcomer Jomary Torres of the Philippines at ONE: Kings and Conquerors in Macau.
The unheralded Torres ended up choking out Ishige in the second round in what many believe to be un upset.
Fast-forward five months later, Ishige is once again taking on an unheralded promotional newcomer in Trinidad.
The 20-year old model-turned-mixed martial artist tries to follow in the footsteps of fellow Pinay Torres and hand Ishige her second-straight loss inside the ONE cage.
In fact, the Manileña reached out to Torres and asked for some tips on how to beat the Thai superstar.
“Yes, kinausap ko si Jomary, na pwede kong gamitin yung striking skills,” Trinidad said. “Alam natin kapag mga Filipino, ano tayo sa suntok diba, malakas tayo sumuntok, so pwede ko magamit yung striking skills ko sa laban.”
(Yes, I got to talk to Jomary, that I can use my striking skills. We all know that Filipinos, we’re fond of using our hands. We hit hard, so I can use those skills in the fight.)
Aside from Jomary Torres, Trinidad also got to consult a couple of ONE Championship veterans in Team Lakay’s April Osenio and Gina Iniong. Osenio will be fighting on the same card, and Iniong will be cornering her.
“May time na nang-hingi ako ng tips kasi syempre mas marami silang experience sa akin, ako baguhan pa lang.”
“Nagtatanong-tanong ako kung ano ba yung pwede kong gawin, ano yung dapat kong pag-handaan, mga ganung bagay pag-dating sa cage.” Trinidad continued.
(I’ve asked for tips because they’re more experienced than I am. I’ve asked them what I can do, what I need to prepare for, things like that with regards to the cage.)
One of the things that fans look foward to most when Ishige fights is her unique walkout entrance, which includes her coming out as Chun-Li from Street Fighter or as the Pink Ranger from Power Rangers.
Trindad says that she doesn’t have any elaborate or extravagant walkouts planned, but says that she’ll let her work inside the cage take center stage.
“Sa loob ng cage, ibibigay ko yung best tsaka yung hindi pa talaga nakikita ng mga tao. I will surprise all of you guys.”
(I’ll give my best inside the cage, something that fans haven’t seen before. I will surprise all of you guys.)
Rome Trinidad and Rika Ishige go head to head at ONE Championship: Warriors of the World on Saturday, December 9th at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
