Team Lakay women's strawweight contender April Osenio had herself a rough return to the cage at ONE: Warriors of the World in Bangkok, Thailand last Saturday.
After surviving a deep guillotine choke attempt, Osenio decided to stand and bang with Chinese boxer Xiong Jing Nan, but ended up getting dropped with a right hook in the first round, leading to a referee stoppage.
It would have been a chance to snap the Baguio-based Team Lakay's year-end skid, but fate had other plans.
After the fight, the 23-year old Osenio who dropped to 2-3 in her career, made no excuses and owned up to the loss.
"Yung gabing 'to, sa tingin ko hindi talaga para sa akin pero bata pa ako, kailangan ko din mag-improve." An emotional Osenio told the media after the fight.
(This just wasn't my night, but I'm young, and I still need to improve.)
With everything considered, it would have been easy for Osenio to pin the loss on the many different factors heading into the bout.
This was Osenio’s first bout back after taking a year off to complete her studies, so ring rust could have been a factor.
Another is that a day before the fight, it was revealed that her fight with Xiong was changed into a catchweight bout after the ONE Championship newcomer failed to make the needed weight and came in over.
The Filipina former Wushu champion however, stil doesn’t see that as an excuse for the loss.
“Hindi naman excuse yun, kasi talagang natalo.”
(That’s really not an excuse, I really just lost.)
Osenio admits that she wasn’t able to follow the gameplan, which was to take the bigger Xiong to the ground to nullify her striking.
“Hindi maganda, bawi na lang next time.” Osenio said of her performance that night.
(It wasn’t good. I need to bounce back next time.)
With Bangkok being the last card for the year for ONE Championship, it’s back to the drawing board for Osenio and the rest of Team Lakay, who are currently on a four-fight losing skid.
“Kailangan ko din bumalik sa gym para i-improve yung weaknesses ko.” said Osenio.
(I need to go back to the gym and improve on my weaknesses.)
