Two-division ONE Championship world champion Martin 'The Situ-Asian' Nguyen has a big 2018 ahead of him, as he goes for his third world title in as many weight divisions.
In a Facebook post, ONE Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced that Nguyen, the reigning ONE featherweight and lightweight world champion will be moving down in weight to challenge longest-reigning ONE champion Bibiano Fernandes for the bantamweight world championship in March.
After shocking the world and knocking out Marat Gafurov to become the ONE featherweight world champion back in August, Nguyen silenced the pro-Pinoy crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena in November by knocking out defending ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang.
Already in the history books for being ONE Championship’s only two-division world title holder, Nguyen could further cement his legacy as one of the best to ever set foot inside a ONE cage by becoming a three-division world champion, a feat that has never been done in ONE, or in MMA for that matter.
As always, it won’t be an easy task for Nguyen however, as he’ll be facing arguably ONE’s most dominant world champion in Fernandes.
After capturing the ONE bantamweight strap back in 2013, Fernandes has defended it a record six times, four of those defenses have come via stoppage.
Much like Nguyen, a win in this fight will cement Fernandes’ place in the annals of ONE history as one of the best to ever compete in the promotion and a chance to prove himself as a pound-for-pound great.
The Fernandes-Nguyen superfight is expected to take place in Bangkok, Thailand on March 2018.
