Geje Eustaquio gunning for finish in rematch with Akhmetov
"I look forward to the next time to seal it off with a submission or a knock out so that would be a better decision." - Geje Eustaquio

The last time that Geje Eustaquio and Kairat Akhmetov shared the ONE Championship cage back in 2017, it can be argued that the Filipino should have gone home victorious, had it not been for an errant call on the part of veteran referee Yuji Shimada.

Instead, Eustaquio wound up losing to Akhmetov via split decision after three rounds.

On Friday, Eustaquio has the chance to avenge his loss to Akhmetov when the two face each other again for the interim ONE Championship flyweight world title at in the main event of ONE: Global Superheroes in Manila.

"It’s going to be a continuation of the last time, the fourth round is coming, the fifth round, it can go to eight rounds." Eustaquio told ABS-CBN Sports.

Having faced the former world champion from Kazakhstan, Eustaquio already knows what to expect from Akhmetov, and he says the the gameplan remains the same.

"Strike with him, defend his wrestling, if I get the opportunity, I’ll take him down."

Looking back at his first fight with Akhmetov, the Team Lakay standout believes that he would have been able to swing the decision his way, had their first meeting been a five-rounder.

"Yes, perhaps. Most probably ganun nag siguro, I could have reversed the decision if it had gone two more rounds."

And while what's done is done, Eustaquio admits that the errant call from referee Shimada still stings a bit, given that he would've gotten a big win over a former world champion.

"Yeah of course, andun na, because I believe I won in the first round that time, but it’s part of the game, we’re human, we commit errors."

As the age-old addage goes, there's no use crying over spilled milk, and the Baguio native now looks forward to Friday's rematch, where he says he'll be looking for the finish.

"I look forward to the next time to seal it off with a submission or a knock out so that would be a better decision."

Geje Eustaquio and Kairat Akhmetov battle for the interim ONE flyweight world championship at ONE: Global Superheroes on Friday, January 26th at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Philippines.
