When asked about what fight he was most excited about on ONE Championship's Global Superheroes card in Manila this Friday, January 26th at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, ONE founder and chairman Chatri Sityodtong pinpointed the Manila card's lone non-MMA bout.
Aside from the interim ONE flyweight title bout between Geje Eustaquio and Kairat Akhmetov, as well as eight other MMA bouts, the fans in Manila will be treated to full-striking Muay Thai bout between Thailand's Sam-A Gaiyanghadao and Italy's Joseph Lasiri.
"Another fight that I’m very excited for, they didn't talk about it in the press conference but we should all be looking forward to it, we’re having our very first Muay Thai fight in the cage, with Sam-A Gaiyanghadao and Joseph Lasiri." Sityodtong shared with ABS-CBN Sports during the pre-fight press conference. "Those guys are two of the best in the world, and they’re gonna be putting on MMA gloves, doing full striking Muay Thai inside the cage, so that’s the first time."
Gaiyanghadao is a retired former Muay Thai boxer and currently a teacher at the Evolve Martial Arts Gym in Singapore. Considered one of the best in the world to ever enter a Muay Thai ring, Gaiyanghadao possesses a 364-46-9 professional record and is a multiple-time Lumpinee Boxing Champion.
Lasiri posseses a 34-4 professional Muay Thai record and is currently the WBA Muay Thai super bantamweight world champion and the WBC Muay Thai interim super bantamweight champion.
This won't be the first time that ONE Championship has featured exhibition bouts in their cards.
Back in May of 2017, former ONE lightweight world champion Shinya Aoki and multiple-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion Garry Tonon competed in a 15-minute grappling match, with Tonon getting the late submission via heel hook.
Aoki then faced former ONE featherweight world champion Marat Gafurov, also in a 15-minute grappling match at ONE: Kings of Courage in Jakarta just last January 26th, getting the win via rear naked choke.
"You’ll see more of that in the future, ONE Championship is going to start introducing other martial arts, so we did Lethwei when we were in Myanmar, we did some Silat in our last even in Jakarta, and now we’re doing real Muay Thai rules in the cage." Sityodtong added.
ONE Championship: Global Superheroes happens on Friday, January 26th at the Mall of Asia Arena.
