Former ONE Championship Lightweight world champion made a triumphant return to the cage, putting on a takedown defense clinic to outpoint Russian grappler Kharun Atlangeriev en route to a unanimous decision win at ONE: Unstoppable Dreams, Friday evening at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Fighting for the first time since losing his ONE world title to Martin Nguyen in Manila back in November of 2017, Folayang came out with a more patient gameplan as he picked his shots and peppered Atlangeriev with low kicks and body shots.
Atlangeriev ducked under a Folayang hook and managed to take the former champion down, but not for long, as Folayang reversed the situation and wound up mounting the Russian.
Folayang unloaded strikes from the top, but Atlangeriev did a good job of avoiding shots and scrambling back to dominant position.
The Team Lakay star turned up the offense and defense in round two, opening with a vicious side kick that dropped Atlangeriev early.
The Russian grappler tried to bait Folayang into following on the ground, but the Pinoy let Atlangeriev up eventually.
Folayang unloaded another side kick that connected and Atlangeriev again tried to bring the fight back to the ground, but Folayang wasn't having any of it as he proceeded to stuff any takedown attempt thrown at him.
Atlangeriev came out a bit more aggressive in round three, putting together a slick combination that got Folayang's attention.
Still, it was all Folayang the rest of the way, as the former champ continued to prevent any takedown attempts from Atlangeriev.
After three rounds, Folayang earned a unanimous decision nod to begin his road back to a world championship.
Folayang improves to 19-6 in his career while handing Atlangeriev his first loss in twelve fights.
