ONE Championship: Geje Eustaquio hoping to keep rematch success against Adriano Moraes

“They say victory is sweeter the second time around. Sa akin siguro, I usually win rematches because na-feel ko na yung opponent, and my development is faster than them.” - Geje Eustaquio
Interim ONE Championship Flyweight World Champion Geje Eustaquio has a thing for rematches.
The Team Lakay flyweight star is unbeaten in his two previous rematches, avenging his 2015 loss to Anatpong Bunrad back in 2017, and decisioning former ONE champion Kairat Akhmetov in early 2018 to capture the interim ONE world title, which came off the heels of a close split decision loss.
On June 23rd, Eustaquio will once again figure in a rematch when he meets reigning ONE Championship Flyweight world champion Adriano Moraes in a world title unification match at ONE: Pinnacle of Power in Macau.
And if history is any indication, then ‘The King of Rematch’ is in for a good night.
“I’m so much pumped for this. Me and my team are preparing, they say it’s a once in a lifetime chance, so I have to make it and bring that belt home.” Eustaquio said at a press luncheon in Manila, Wednesday afternoon. “The preparation is just the same, it’s not my first rematch, they say I’m the King of Rematch, I used to rematch with a lot of guys in ONE Championship, most especially in flyweight.”
But what is it about rematches that brings the best out of Eustaquio?
“They say victory is sweeter the second time around. Sa akin siguro, I usually win rematches because na-feel ko na yung opponent, and my development is faster than them.” Eustaquio said.
The main difference this time around however, is that Moraes’s win over Eustaquio back in their first meeting wasn’t via split decision. Rather, it was a dominant second-round submission win for the Brazilian submission ace.
Eustaquio believes that he’s improved by leaps and bounds since their maiden encounter back in 2014, and on fight night, he’s ready to show it.
“2014, talagang grade one pa lang tayo noon in terms of grappling. I have shown in the whole world how I’ve developed with my grappling or jiu-jitsu, and I’m a bit confident now that I can roll with the Brazilian blackbelt, or ‘The Black Diamond’”
With a chance at revenge, and more importantly a chance at brining home another world championship to Team Lakay in Baguio City, Eustaquio is motivated.
“I’m heading into this fight hungry.”
Geje Eustaquio faces Adriano Moraes for the unified ONE Championship Flyweight World Title at ONE: Pinnacle of Power on Saturday, June 23rd at the Studio City Event Center in Macau, China.
