Kevin Belingon is the new Interim ONE Championship Bantamweight World Champion
Team Lakay bantamweight star Kevin Belingon gave the Philippines another ONE World Championship after defeating two-division world champion Martin Nguyen via Unanimous Decision to become the new Interim ONE Championship Bantamweight World Champion in the main event of ONE: Reign of Kings, Friday evening at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila.
Belingon came out aggressive early in the match, attacking the bigger Nguyen with some leg kicks, before an accidental headbutt halted the action for a bit.
The Pinoy knockout artist tagged Nguyen late in the first round, getting the two-division champ's attention.
Nguyen got aggressive with his kicks in the second round as well, throwing an array of front kicks and question mark kicks, but just couldn't catch the quicker Belingon.
Belingon tagged Nguyen again, forcing the Vietnamese-Australian star to shoot for takedowns, which were easily stuffed by the hometown bet.
By the third round, it was clear that Belingon was connecting on his strikes more, as he continued to frustrate Nguyen, who just couldn't seem to time his opponent properly.
More of the same in the championship rounds, with Belingon stuffing takedowns from Nguyen, while also getting his hits in.
After five rounds of action, it was clear that Belingon had done enough for the Unanimous Decision win.
With the win, Belingon makes the Philippines the country with the most world championship wins in ONE Championship, joining current heavyweight world champion Brandon Vera, and Team Lakay teammate and reigning flyweight world champion Geje Eustaquio.
More importantly, it secures Belingon another shot at reigning bantamweight king Bibiano Fernandes.
The two crossed paths back in 2016, with Fernandes winning via submission.
Belingon improves to 20-5 in his MMA career.
