Tough path could make winning title sweeter for Belingon
“Parang mas matamis na kung matalo ko si Nguyen tapos matalo ko si Bibiano, de mas maganda.”

Team Lakay star and top ONE Championship bantamweight Kevin ‘The Silencer’ Belingon has a chance to realize a long-time dream to become a world champion when he faces two-division world title holder Martin ‘The Situ-Asian’ Nguyen for the interim ONE Bantamweight World Championship in the main event of Reign of Kings, Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Aside from that, a win for Belingon pretty much secures a shot at reigning bantamweight king Bibiano Fernandes once the Brazilian champion is ready to get back to action.

Belingon was already considered the rightful number one contender to Fernandes’ title for a while now, and was originally scheduled to get his shot, had the champion not been injured.

Now, instead of waiting around, Belingon will have to go through one of the promotion’s top guys in Nguyen, to tighten his grip on his status as the next guy in line in the bantamweight division.

Indeed, fighting a naturally bigger guy like Nguyen, who’s also ONE Championship’s reigning lightweight and welterweight world champion, won’t be a walk in the park for Belingon, but it will definitely make things a lot sweeter if he ultimately manages to go on to become the undisputed bantamweight king.

“Of course, mas maganda yung pakiramdam mo. Si Martin, two-division world champion, kung matatalo ko siya ngayon, parang ako na rin yung two-division world champion.” Belingon said during the Reign of Kings Press Launch, Tuesday afternoon. “Parang mas matamis na kung matalo ko si Nguyen tapos matalo ko si Bibiano, de mas maganda.”

Not to get ahead of ourselves, but if Belingon does end up defeating Nguyen and then getting his revenge on Fernandes, it’s not far off to say that it would be one of the best accomplishments in ONE Championship.

If Belingon defeats Nguyen, he would be taking out a two-division world champion, and he becomes just one of three people to get the better of The Situ-Asian, with the other two being Fernandes and then-champion Marat Gafurov.

If Belingon then goes on to topple Fernandes, he would be dethroning the longest-reigning ONE world champion. Fernandes has been ONE’s bantamweight king since 2013, compiling a record seven title defenses, two of which came against Belingon and Nguyen.

Now, that’s a lot of looking ahead, and with everything considered, it’s quite path to take towards an undisputed title reign for Belingon.

Of course, real warriors don’t like taking the easy way out, and like Belingon said, the tough path makes the ultimate victory that much sweeter.
