With the arrival of multiple-time world champion Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez, ONE Championship’s lightweight division just got a lot more competitive.
Being already one of the more talent-rich weight divisions in the promotion, of course there are a number of matchups waiting for Alvarez that fights would find quite enticing.
Take for example a showdown with former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang of Team Lakay.
Much like Alvarez, Folayang is a heavy-hitter, and the Filipino martial arts hero provides quite the intriguing matchup for the Philadelphia-native.
Folayang, who’s expressed excitement for the arrival of Alvarez, will be looking for a second run at the ONE Lightweight World Championship when he meets Singapore’s Amir Khan for the title at ONE: CONQUEST OF CHAMPIONS in Manila on 23 November.
The most talked about matchup however, is a trilogy bout against another former ONE Lightweight World Champion in Shinya Aoki.
Alvarez and Aoki have shared the cage before and the two have split the results, which makes a third meeting all the more interesting.
Another sure-to-be exciting paring would be Alvarez versus Khan.
The Singaporean knockout-artist is also one of the most well-rounded talents on the lightweight division, and he could definitely give Alvarez an exciting matchup.
Or maybe a bout with Turkey’s Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev, who’s fresh off a stunning KO win over fellow top contender TImofey Nastyukhin?
Another would-be interesting matchup would be former ONE Lightwieght World Champion and reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion Martin Nguyen.
Another heavy-handed star, Nguyen should be a fun matchup for Alvarez as well.
For Alvarez however, he says that he didn’t come to ONE Championship with the intention of facing a certain lightweight competitor.
Rather, he says he’s ready to take on the entire division.
“I’m looking forward to competing with the best lightweights in the world once again, what really excites me is the idea of, I went all across the world and fought with all of the best promotions in the world,” Alvarez shared during the conference call for ONE: HEART OF THE LION, “what I really look forward to is winning a third world championship title at ONE Championship against the best lightweights that are there.”
Alvarez’s goal in ONE Championship is clear, an that’s become a champion again.
“What I’m doing is I’m looking forward to another crop of the best lightweights in the world who could possibly be unknown and I’m going to welcome that with open arms and go after this world title. It’s more the ONE Championship world title than an actual guy. I signed on the dotted line with Chatri and he’s going to give me my opponent, and one by one, we’re going to figure out how to beat these guys and get to that belt,” he stated.
