La Trinidad, Benguet-based mixed martial arts stable Team Lakay is having arguably their best year ever, this 2018.
Just this year, the Philippines' premier MMA stable earned four world championships, with Geje Eustaquio, Joshua Pacio, Kevin Belingon, and Eduard Folayang all reaching the top of their respective divisions in the Singapore-based MMA promotion ONE Championship.
Meanwhile, in the Brave Combat Federation outfit, Team Lakay's Stephen Loman remains the promotion's bantamweight king.
Outside the MMA cage, the team continues to display even more improvement, and recently, two of their stars earned made some progress in the submission grappling field.
Former ONE Featherweight World Champion and top lightweight contender Honorio "The Rock" Banario and featherweight contender Edward "The Ferocious" Kelly both earned their blue belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Banario and Kelly were promoted by Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and Filipino martial arts legend John Baylon.
Baylon has been instrumental in Team Lakay's marked improvement in grappling during the past years, as his Clube de Jiu-Jitsu-Filipinas has been Team Lakay's go-to training grounds when it comes to grappling.
It can be argued that Team Lakay's much-improved grappling acumen, or "Baguio Jiu-Jitsu" as they have playfull called it, has helped the team nab all of their four world championships this year.
Earlier this year, Banario and Kelly were successful in their first foray into submission grappling tournaments, as they both hauled in multiple medals at the 2018 Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Philippine Internatonal Open in Manila back in October.
Both Banario and Kelly are coming off wins under the ONE banner, and are looking to ride Team Lakay's momentum into another successful campaign in 2019.
