Honorio Banario says he isn't looking for revenge on Eduard Folayang's behalf when he meets Lowen Tynanes in Manila
Team Lakay lightweight Honorio "The Rock" Banario says he isn't looking to exact revenge in his teammate's behalf when he faces undefeated Hawaiian Lowen Tynanes at ONE: Hero's Ascent at the Mall of Asia Arena on Friday night.
Tynanes is 9-0 in his mixed martial arts career, and one of those nine wins is against Banario's teammate and current reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard "Landslide" Folayang.
In just his second pro fight, Tynanes challenged Folayang, then the reigning URCC Welterweight Champion, and beat the Team Lakay star via doctor's stoppage in the first round.
For Banario, his fight against Tynanes is all about testing himself against a tough opponent.
"For me, I'm just looking at this challenge for my skills. I'm not looking for revenge," he said at the pre-event press conference. "I respect Lowen, and I just want to challenge myself against better fighters. I'm happy if I get the win, it will be a test for my skills."
On that note, Banario says that he has recieved some pointers from his Kuya Eduard on fighting Tynanes, a high-level wrestler and grappler.
"Sabi niya kung gaano ka-lakas si Lowen, tapos kung ano yung naramdaman niya nung laban, yun yung iiwasan natin and yun yung ika-counter natin para hindi tayo madehado tulad ng first na laban nila."
Also at stake for the winner will be a spot in the semifinals of the ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix, against either Timofey Nastyukhin or former UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez, one of ONE's biggest recent athlete acquisitions.
The opportunity to potentially face Alvarez is something that is also serving as a source of motivation for Banario heading into this important quarterfinals matchup with Tynanes.
"Oo, parang nacha-challenge yung isip ko kapag tinatanong kung manalo ako sa laban tapos makakalaban ko si Eddie Alvarez, doon ko mapapatunayan kung hanggang saan yung level nating mga Pilipino, kasi alam naman natin na si Alvarez, dating champion din sa UFC, so hindi lingid sa ating kaalaman na he is a high-level athlete."
"Pag matatapatan natin yun tapos kung sakaling matalo natin or masabayan natin hanggang matapos yung laro, at least masasabi natin na yung level natin hindi malayo sa level nila sa ibang bansa," he added.
