They say life begins at 40.
If so, then that rings true for Rene “The Challenger” Catalan who, at 40 years old, is set for the biggest match of his career in ONE Championship.
Catalan is set to battle former ONE Strawweight World Champion Yoshitaka “Nobita” Naito on the undercard of ONE: REIGN OF VALOR, which emanates from the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Manila, Philippines on Friday, 8 March.
“The Challenger,” who is the oldest of the Catalans competing in The Home Of Martial Arts, has found a second wind late in his career, which saw him go winless in his first three matches as a professional.
However, Catalan was undeterred. Instead of quitting, he focused on sharpening his skills and now he rides high on a five-bout winning streak. As it stands, he could be one victory away from earning a World Title shot.
“If you’re dedicated to your craft and you’re motivated, then age is just a number,” he said.
“It’s all about believing in yourself that you can compete at the highest level.”
It has been an amazing run for the Catalan Fighting System head coach, who has not lost a match since 2016. This was around the time when everyone started counting him out, but he surprised many when he was racking up wins and climbing the strawweight ranks.
Now that he is a step closer to his dream, Catalan said that nothing is going to stop him from claiming the ONE Strawweight World Title — not even the dangerous Naito.
“That is the ultimate goal of my career. No matter the challenges, I will be shooting for my dream. The goal is to be champion here in ONE Championship,” he explained.
