Brazilian MMA legend Vitor Belfort has signed with ONE Championship

Singapore-based martial arts organization ONE Championship snagged another big name after signing Brazilian mixed martial arts legend Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort.

The announcement was made Friday, days after ONE Championship chairman Chatri Sityodtong posted a photo of himself with Belfort at the ONE offices in Singapore.

Sityodtong also announced the news on social media.

Belfort was in attendance at ONE’s latest event, ONE: Call to Greatness in Singapore last February 22nd.

Easily one of the most popular fighters to come out of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro’s Belfort has been competing since 1996, and took the UFC by storm as a 19-year old at UFC 12.

Belfort would go on to become the heavyweight tournament champion in just his second fight with the promotion. In 2004, Belfort would defeat MMA legend Randy Couture to capture the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, his lone world title run with the UFC.

In his 41-fight career, Belfort was a middleweight contender and a light heavyweight contender, having faced the likes of Anderson Silva, Chris Weidman, and Jon Jones for the championship.

Belfort becomes the latest big name to join the continuously-growing roster of world champions competing with ONE. In 2018, ONE signed Demetrious Johnson and Eddie Alvarez, both are set to make their promotional debuts at ONE’s maiden event in Tokyo, Japan on March 31st.
