"Danny is young, hungry and promising. Anything can happen inside the cage. This is mixed martial arts," - Geje Eustaquio on Danny Kingad
At first glance, longtime pound-for-pound king Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson should be the hands-down favorite to win the highly-anticipated ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix.
However, former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio believes that most pundits of the growing mixed martial arts scene are overlooking his Team Lakay stablemate Danny “The King” Kingad.
While Johnson built a legendary career over in the United States as the longest reigning Flyweight Mixed Martial Arts World Champion, Eustaquio believes that Asian competitors should not be underestimated as they are generally built for smaller weight classes such as the flyweight division.
"They say DJ is the best, but that is in the West. We do not know what is waiting [for him] here in the East. Flyweight is a strong division for Asian athletes,” he said.
Kingad and Johnson will both be competing in the quarter-final contests of the aforementioned tourney, which will kick off at ONE: A NEW ERA in Tokyo, Japan on 31 March.
Kingad is set to take on former ONE World Title challenger Andrew Leone of the United States, while Johnson is slated to square off with Japan’s Yuya “Little Piranha” Wakamatsu.
Johnson, a mixed martial artist hailing from Kirkland, Washington, has long been touted by countless observers as the greatest athlete to have ever set foot inside the cage.
Using a deadly combination of speed, power, explosiveness, and world-class wrestling, the 32-year-old American has seemingly done it all.
Eustaquio predicts that Kingad and Johnson will be the last two men standing in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix.
While fans and experts alike tend to think that Johnson would merely steamroll his way through the tournament, "Gravity" cites that people should not sleep on Kingad.
"Danny is young, hungry and promising. Anything can happen inside the cage. This is mixed martial arts," Eustaquio stated.
"Johnson cannot guarantee a sure win over Danny because my teammate can give him the biggest upset of his lifetime."
