Team Lakay bantamweight Kevin Belingon was on the wrong end of a disqualification, resulting in him losing the ONE Bantamweight World Championship to Bibiano Fernandes of Brazil at ONE: A New Era, Sunday evening at the historic Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.
Fernandes, the former champion, was in control for much of bout after catching Belingon with a punch that had the Pinoy wobbly and in survival mode.
Unable to score the knockout finish, Fernandes looked to do what he does best and finish the fight on the ground and scored the takedown with relative ease to end the bout on top.
In the second round, a tentative Belingon looked to regain his composure but found himself getting taken down again with a minute left in the round.
In the third round, Fernandes again scored the takedown but was met with a flurry of elbows from the bottom from Belingon. Action was halted however, as the elbows were to the top and back of the head, which are considered illegal in mixed martial arts.
With Fernandes unable to continue, Belingon was shown a red card which leads to an automatic disqualification, therefore he surrenders the title to Fernandes, who wasn't pleased with the outcome.
Fernandes becomes a two-time ONE Bantamweight Champion and regains the title that he held for nearly five years.
