“It’s still a poor performance, that’s what I give myself,” - Edward Kelly
Edward "The Ferocious" Kelly is far from satisfied with his latest performance despite a second-round technical knockout victory over Sung Jong Lee at ONE: ROOTS OF HONOR last Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.
Kelly said that he is not pleased with his latest win because it did not come smoothly.
The South Korean grappler, after all, was able to score takedowns and managed to pull several submission attempts under his sleeve during the contest.
“It’s still a poor performance, that’s what I give myself,” said Kelly.
“I knew that he was going for the takedown on the first try but he still got me down easily. Obviously there’s still plenty of work to do.”
There were plenty of times that Kelly has hinted retirement before this bout happened, especially with 16 years of grind under his belt.
But after that scintillating performance, he feels like he still has a lot left in the gas tank.
“I still feel good, but I still have a lot of work to do looking at it. Especially with the influx of great featherweights coming in,” said Kelly.
Looking ahead and with his confidence back in play, Kelly is now excited for what lies ahead.
He says that everything lies with the higher-ups of ONE Championship and he vows to be at his best whoever he battles next.
“I don't think I am in the position to pick opponents,” said Kelly. “Whoever it may be, I promise to be in top form.”
