Three Filipino mixed martial artists from the fabled Team Lakay of Baguio City will be making their respective international debuts in the upcoming Shooto show on Monday, 6 May at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
Team Lakay stalwarts Jerome "Torogi" Wanawan, Jared Almazan, and Jean Claude Saclag will be taking on different foes in the hope of impressing and eventually making their way to ONE Championship.
ONE Championship and Shooto announced an official partnership last January where World Champions from Shooto will be granted an automatic slot in the ever growing roster at The Home of Martial Arts.
The partnership was a welcome development for Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao, as he sees the tie-up as a window of opportunity for athletes wanting to strut their wares on the global stage.
"For Shooto Promotion, this is supported by ONE and it is our first time that we got offered to fight there which is another milestone for us,” said Sangiao.
Wanawan is slated to lock horns with Ryohei "Ken Asuka" Kurosawa in a strawweight showdown of well-rounded martial artists. Almazan, on the other hand, is tasked to share the stage against Hiroba Minowa while Saclag will battle a veteran in Ryo Okada.
Shooto World Champions usually translate their success into the ONE Championship Circle, evident in reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki and former Strawweight World Champions Yoshitaka "Nobito" Naito and Yosuke "The Ninja" Saruta.
That is exactly what Team Lakay is hoping to achieve, and though it’s easier said than done - the team is grateful for yet another opportunity to showcase their talents in the international stage.
