“I think he’s in good shape, but some things have to change. I observed in his previous fights that his reactions are lacking and he’s not as quick as he used to be,” Edward Kelly on his brother Eric
There will come a time when physical preparation won’t be enough.
In the case of Eric "The Natural" Kelly, his physique may have long reached its peak — that is, according to his younger brother and fellow ONE Championship featherweight athlete Edward "The Ferocious" Kelly.
Eric was previously touted as one of the fastest rising homegrown mixed martial artists from the Philippines. Backed with grit and seemingly unlimited stamina, his well-roundedness proved to be too much to handle for most of his opponents early in his career.
Nowadays, however, “The Natural” is on a really bad slump. In order to break this spell and turn his career around, things have to change.
“I told him to go through mental training, and he agreed. I know that has been dragging him down because, physically, he looks great. His mental toughness and fighting spirit are what’s lacking,” Edward explained.
“I know he lives in the gym. He doesn’t do anything but train. I don’t think we can say that he lacks training, but he lacks the killer instinct already. Maybe he got carried away with his other problems.”
The older Kelly will have to turn things around quickly as he takes on Niu Kang Kang on the undercard of ONE: LEGENDARY QUEST, which takes place at the Baoshan Arena in Shanghai, China on Saturday, 15 June.
A victory would be huge for Eric, as it will stop his disappointing six-match slide. Also, it would be a self-esteem booster for the once-highly touted featherweight.
“I think he’s in good shape, but some things have to change. I observed in his previous fights that his reactions are lacking and he’s not as quick as he used to be,” Edward continued.
“I think he knows the adjustments that he has to make. I know he wants to win again and get the adoration of the people once more.”
Despite the overwhelming amount of heartbreaks, Edward still believes that his brother will one day return to the winner's circle.
He is confident that the Eric Kelly of old is just somewhere out there waiting to be unleashed, and that could be on the night of 15 June.
“I think he can get his old form back,” Edward said. “I am confident in him, and I hope to see him back on the winning track."
