“I’ll be having a child soon, and that’s what I am fighting for now. It’s a big motivation for me to do more in my career."
From getting married to helping out his father in the local elections for Mankayan, Honorio “The Rock” Banario has certainly been a busy man.
Now it’s back to business for the former ONE Featherweight World Champion.
The 29-year-old star from Team Lakay hopes to be included on the undercard of ONE: DAWN OF HEROES, which is set to take place at the Mall Of Asia Arena in Manila on Friday, 2 August.
“After the election, I started going back to training just to get my cardio back,” the Benguet native shared.
“I started working on my shortcomings in my previous match, particularly with my strength and conditioning. Now I am heading to Manila for jiu-jitsu, and then back to Baguio for mixed martial arts.”
Banario, together with ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua "The Passion" Pacio and former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard "Landslide" Folayang, went down from the mountains of Baguio to train at Academia John Baylon in Pasay.
It has become a routine for Team Lakay stars to train under Olympian John Baylon during the off-season. Though nothing is set in stone yet, it pays to be prepared and that starts by working on their grappling.
“We are very open to learning different types of martial arts because it’s needed for our game. We had an inkling to work in the gym of coach John because he’s legitimate and he’s well known,” Banario explained.
“He has always welcomed us with open arms, and that’s why we keep on coming back to his gym. Everything he has been teaching us, we’ve been able to use in mixed martial arts.”
Banario also changed his diet so he can achieve peak performance when training.
After recently marrying his longtime girlfriend Jessica, “The Rock” and his now-wife are expecting the birth of their firstborn in August.
That has further motivated the Team Lakay standout to push himself beyond his limit and become a better athlete in ONE Championship.
“Now that I have a family, I need to provide for them,” he said. “I’ll be having a child soon, and that’s what I am fighting for now. It’s a big motivation for me to do more in my career."
