“This is where they have to show up. It’s not gonna be easy but I think they are truly making themselves ready for that day.” - Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao
Team Lakay is gunning for a clean sweep when four of its athletes compete in what they believe is their most important outing to date at ONE: DAWN OF HEROES on 2 August which is set to take place at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.
Former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard "Landslide" Folayang is tasked to battle one of the greatest lightweights of all time when he shares the Circle with Eddie "The Underground King" Alvarez.
Former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio "The Rock" Banario and Danny "The King" Kingad, meanwhile, are both set to feature in the ONE Lightweight and Flyweight World Grand Prix respectively.
Banario is tasked to lock horns with Russian knockout artist Timofey Nastyukhin while Kingad will face former ONE Flyweight World Champion Kairat "The Kazakh" Akhmetov.
Also on the undercard is Edward "The Ferocious" Kelly, who is slated to square-off against China’s Xie "The Stalker" Bin.
“This is a big night for the boys,” said Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao.
“This is where they have to show up. It’s not gonna be easy but I think they are truly making themselves ready for that day.”
Sangiao sees the showdown between Folayang and Alvarez as a competition between two athletes with similar styles who were both successful in their respective organizations before this match happened.
He admitted that there is pressure to perform on the evening of 2 August, but he knows that a win could catapult Folayang's career to greater heights.
Banario and Kingad on the other hand will be looking to book a slot in the finals of their respective tournaments which will happen at ONE: CENTURY on October.
For Kelly, a win would get him started on a two-bout winning streak as he dreams to challenge for the ONE Featherweight World Title currently owned by Martin "The Situ-Asian" Nguyen.
Team Lakay knows what it is like to win, but they are also all too familiar on how it is like to lose. They went through the pain of going 0-5 in one evening in front of their Filipino fans early in their careers, and it is an experience Sangiao would prefer not to go feel again.
“This already happened so I wouldn’t want to talk about it, but our goal is to win every match,” said Sangiao. “All I can say is they’re preparing now and they’ll certainly be ready for August 2.”
