The best strikers from both ends of the world will collide on the undercard of ONE: DAWN OF HEROES on 2 August at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.
Coming off a first round TKO loss to Timofey Nastyukin at ONE: A NEW ERA in March of 2019, Alvarez vowed to do better in his second appearance in The Home of Martial Arts.
"Look, I got the first one out of the way. I lost, no problem. I did the same thing in the UFC [against Donald Cerrone], and I honestly almost did the same thing in my debut in Bellator," the American mixed martial artist said in an interview with BJ Penn Radio.
"I got dropped terribly. My debut in Bellator against [Greg Loughran] that no one knew. I got caught pretty clean," he added.
Alvarez has always struggled in his debuts, but he’s confident that it won’t be happening again.
"I bounced back and got the win, but I’m not a big fan of my debuts, put it that way. So I got it out of the way, got it past me, and now I can go full-on, go undefeated straight to the belt."
Furthermore, "The Underground King" exhumed confidence that he is going to get the finish and bounce back from his previous outing.
"It’s in his hometown. So I’m looking forward to a tough opponent and I’m viewing the fight as one that I absolutely have to finish," Alvarez said.
"I am not coming in for a decision. I expect to lose if it goes to a decision. So I have every intention to finish."
Folayang, for his part, is also coming off a loss when he dropped his ONE Lightweight World Title by first-round submission to Shinya "Tobikan Judan" Aoki in the main event of ONE: A NEW ERA.
Like his counterpart, Folayang is just as hungry to get his hand raised after that letdown in Japan.
“It’s tough to compare the past from the present. He lost, so it’s natural that he really wants to bounce back,” Folayang said.
“Maybe that’s his way of comforting himself in that defeat. I went through that as well, and of course I wanted to bounce back as quick as possible.”
He had a few things to say when asked about his thoughts about Alvarez's promise of stopping him in Manila. Simply put, "Landslide" won’t allow that to happen in front of his adoring Filipino fans.
“Of course I would not let him. I’m the one who’s gonna finish him,” Folayang said.
