Danny “The King” Kingad has always considered himself a fan of Reece “Lightning” McLaren. Now the 23-year old will get a crack at his longtime idol in the semi-finals of the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix nonetheless.

The dynamic pair of flyweights is set to collide on the undercard of ONE: DAWN OF HEROES on Friday, 2 August, which is set to take place at the 20,000-seat Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.

“Of course I am excited cause it’s one of my goals to face someone I look up to on 2 August,” Kingad said.

“The King” started to hold McLaren in such high regard when the Filipino-Australian pulled a shocker in defeating Mark “Mugen” Striegl by third-round submission in his debut in The Home of Martial Arts at ONE: SPIRIT OF CHAMPIONS in December 2015.

He knew right there that “Lightning” is a rare talent - so he never missed watching his every bout.

“When I first watched him, he was really explosive. He had wrestling and he had striking. That was when he faced Mark Striegl,” Kingad shared.

“I thought to myself I had to watch all of his fights because I considered him my idol.”

But the young phenom from Baguio City vows that his admiration for McLaren will not stand in the way of his goals.

“I want to show what I am made of, and of course, I also want to see the things that I saw from him before,” Kingad said.

“For me, the more that I idolize you, the more that I want to beat you. I am excited. I am motivated to train everyday.”

Kingad believes that he has seen just about everything that McLaren is capable of doing inside the ring. He sees that as an advantage, and promises to showcase a side of his game the world is yet to witness.

“Truth be told, I have some things in my arsenal that people are yet to see,” Kingad playfully teased.

“It’s hard to predict, but I don’t want to disappoint people, I really want to win this for the people, and for me to be able to show my idol what I am capable of.”
