ONE Championship: Bad weather or not, the grind continues for Kevin Belingon

“Our training runs like clockwork. Whatever the weather, we always have a program we can lean on that might be even harder,” - Kevin Belingon
Not even a heavy storm can slow down Kevin "The Silencer" Belingon as he prepares for his highly-anticipated fourth encounter against reigning ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano "The Flash" Fernandes.
The two bantamweights collide on the evening show of ONE Championship’s historic 100th event, ONE: CENTURY, on 13 October at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.
Baguio City has been ravaged by heavy rains since last week. Instead of pacing himself, Belingon, together with Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao, found a way to improvise their training regimen.
“Our training’s going well. The bad weather and the heavy rain won’t be stopping us in our training,” Belingon said.
“Our training is the same in the gym. For our conditioning, we run in the athletic bowl when it’s raining - it’s in the bleachers area along the stairs.”
Team Lakay is known for taking their camp outdoors. Besides honing their skills in the gym, they also go for runs in the mountainous trails of Baguio and work on their strength and conditioning with whatever they can get their hands on during their runs.
Since they cannot do that at of the moment, they are forced to improvise - and it is not necessarily easier.
“We improvise. In the bleachers, there’s the steps - we lift weights and then sprint upstairs. It’s the same, it’s like we’re running on the mountain path or in a track,” Belingon shared.
“As I’ve said, rain won’t stop us. We train when it’s raining. It’s even harder now because we do it in the bleachers.”
His training camp has mainly focused on imposing their game plan and defense against Bibiano’s notorious grappling.
Come rain or shine, Belingon promises to be in the best shape of his life.
“Our training runs like clockwork. Whatever the weather, we always have a program we can lean on that might be even harder,” Belingon said.
"Since the weather affects our outdoor training, coach even adds up things to our training to make up for it.”
