Opening round against Aoki will be crucial for Banario
“If Honorio manages to get out of the first round and lands clean shots, he’ll be able to get it,” - Eduard Folayang

According to former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard "Landslide" Folayang, Honorio "The Rock" Banario has to survive an early onslaught from Shinya "Tobikan Judan" Aoki to win.

The pair meet inside the Circle in Part II of the historic ONE: CENTURY on 13 October at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.

“If Honorio manages to get out of the first round and lands clean shots, he’ll be able to get it,” Folayang said.

“So far, he’s prepared well. Honorio really wants to win this fight. It’s MMA, you can never tell what’s going to happen. You can’t say it will be one-sided because Honorio has knockout power as well.”

If Banario should take advice from anyone before the Aoki clash, it is “Landslide.” He has faced - and conquered - the Japanese wizard in the past.

They first shared the stage in November 2016 when Folayang became the ONE Lightweight World Champion after he scored a third-round technical knockout over Aoki at ONE: DEFENDING HONOR.

A rematch took place three years later at ONE: A NEW ERA in Tokyo, Japan where Aoki evened the score with a triangle choke at the 2:34 mark of round one.

For "Landslide" to stop Aoki, he will need to know more than just how to defend submission attempts.

“You can always work on your submission defense,” Folayang said.

“But I think staying calm in certain situations will be critical. It’s going to be in the mindset. When you have that, you won’t fall easily into his trap. Everything goes together when you’re mentally prepared - but of course, you also have to be physically ready.”

As dangerous as “Tobikan Judan” is, Folayang warned that the former ONE Lightweight World Champion from Japan is even more dangerous when he competes on his home soil.

“He’s different in Japan. You’ll see that he’s always 100 percent. He doesn’t want to lose.”

But should “The Rock” survive Aoki's early submission attempts, Folayang predicts that it will be a long night for the veteran.

“If Honorio gets his momentum and survives Shinya’s submissions, for sure Shinya will certainly struggle.”
