Brandon Vera closing in on dream of becoming two-division champion

“A [second] World Championship belt would put me in a different echelon that not many fighters – not many athletes – in their lifetime ever get to accomplish nor get close to doing,” - Brandon Vera
ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera’s career has spanned for nearly two decades, and he is finally nearing his longtime goal.
The Filipino-American superstar takes on two-division World Champion Aung La "The Burmese Python" N Sang for the latter’s ONE Light Heavyweight World Title at ONE: CENTURY PART II on 13 October at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.
If “The Truth” conquers the “The Burmese Python,” then he not only joins the elite class of two-division World Champions, but he realizes a career-long dream.
“Almost my entire martial arts career has been devoted to becoming a two-division champion – that's how difficult it is to become one,” Vera said.
For his entire career, Vera has been able to move freely between the two weight-classes. But he has yet to become a two-division World Champion.
The Home Of Martial Arts has helped him rediscover himself, though. And he won his last four matches in emphatic fashion.
These wins put the Alliance Training Center standout in a position to complete his long-term goal, and he does not plan to let the opportunity slip by.
“A [second] World Championship belt would put me in a different echelon that not many fighters – not many athletes – in their lifetime ever get to accomplish nor get close to doing,” Vera said.
“You're basically getting to say that you're the best in two divisions in the entire world. When you have something like that, now you get to start asking other athletes from around the world if they really think that they are the best,” he added. “Now you can start poking and prodding to make sure that you are the best in the world.”
The 41-year-old insists that it is all business the moment the Circle door closes and that he has no hard feelings for Aung La N Sang.
In fact, their rivalry has been built upon mutual respect and admiration from the start.
But to reach his dreams, “The Truth” knows he has to get through the Burmese superstar.
“It just happened that the best person in the world in Light Heavyweight is Mr. Aung La [N Sang]. I didn’t want to, but he's the champ right now, so it was a love-hate kind of relationship that I had to do it,” Vera said.
“I'm not looking at the person in front of me – I’m looking at the greater goal.”
How will the match between “The Truth” and “The Burmese Python” play out? Find out at ONE: CENTURY on 13 October at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.
