Angela Lee determined to silence doubters at ONE: CENTURY

"I embrace being the underdog. It’s a unique situation because I did lose to her, but she’s coming into my territory. She’s coming for my belt. I’m going to defend it fiercely. I’ve fixed my mistakes, and I know that I’m going to come back 10 times stronger." - Angela Lee
The epic rematch between the two best female mixed martial artists in the world goes down in the main event of ONE: CENTURY PART I on 13 October at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.
Despite coming off two consecutive losses, the 23-year-old remains confident she will win the rematch since it takes place in the atomweight division – where she has never lost.
"It’s always a push for me to get to this weight class, but this is my division. It’s where I am World Champion," the Singaporean said.
"I know what it takes to get here, and I know how hard I have to work to get here. In that sense, I like it. I’m more than prepared to do what it takes for this fight," she added.
Knowing what is at stake, the Evolve MMA star is bracing herself for another tough grind against the hard-hitting Chinese striker.
"There is definitely a lot at stake. My belt is on the line. I have to defend my title. I’m ready to take on any challenger, but it just so happens that this World Title defense is a rematch against Xiong."
But the tide seems to have turned for Lee – many believe Xiong is coming into this match as the favorite.
Take Filipino journalist and Asian mixed martial arts expert Nissi Icasiano for example. He thinks the losses may be affecting the once unstoppable atomweight.
“I think it will be the mindset,” Icasiano said. “After her second straight loss, what would be her outlook? What would be her mindset?” the journalist added.
Another thing Lee has to be wary of is Xiong’s confidence, especially after the latter escaped most of her submission attempts in their initial meeting at ONE: A NEW ERA on 31 March.
“Xiong knows that she can hurt Lee. That’s the first thing. The second thing is that she’s confident that Lee struggles to submit her,” Icasiano stated. “That’s the kind of confidence that Xiong has now.”
Despite the rough patches that the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blackbelt is going through now “Unstoppable” is confident she can disprove all doubts and regain her status as the best female athlete in the organization.
"Even though I’m the World Champion, a lot of people are siding with Xiong, and that’s fine by me. It doesn’t affect me. I know that I’m the World Champion of this division and I have what it takes to win this fight," Lee said.
"I embrace being the underdog. It’s a unique situation because I did lose to her, but she’s coming into my territory. She’s coming for my belt. I’m going to defend it fiercely. I’ve fixed my mistakes, and I know that I’m going to come back 10 times stronger."
Xiong and Lee will battle for all the marbles at ONE: CENTURY, the biggest World Championship martial arts event in history. No organization has ever promoted two full-scale World Championship events in one day.
The Home Of Martial Arts breaks new ground as 28 World Champions compete in multiple World Title bouts, three World Grand Prix Championship Finals, and several World Champion versus World Champion matches.
The action happens at the famous Ryogoku Kokugikan on 13 October in Tokyo, Japan.
