Honorio Banario knows what to expect against Shinya Aoki
“It’s better to strengthen your mentality before formalizing the game plan. Even if you’re in good condition, if your confidence is low then you can’t execute in the Circle. Right now it’s all in the mind.” - Honorio Banario (Photo courtesy of ONE Championship)

Former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio "The Rock" Banario has nothing but respect for Shinya "Tobikan Judan" Aoki ahead of their 13 October match-up.

The Team Lakay star is set to lock horns with the Japanese submission wizard in Part II of ONE: CENTURY – the biggest martial arts event in history – at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.

Ever since 2013, "The Rock" has dreamed about sharing the Circle against the former ONE Lightweight World Champion, who is touted by some as the greatest mixed martial artist in Asia.

He finally gets to tangle with Aoki six years later, and Banario cannot hide his awe and excitement for the contest.

"He is a legend,” Banario said. “I’ve personally met him and he’s very humble.”

“I respect his skills because he’s beaten the who’s who of the division. I’ll try out my skills with him, hopefully I beat him to the punch before he gets comfortable.”

Aoki's strengths are no secret. “Tobikan Judan” is notorious for shooting takedowns and imposing his will on his opponents.

But besides preparing for Aoki's dreaded jiu-jitsu, Banario knows that mental preparation will be just as important as grappling defense against the legendary Japanese athlete.

“He has many wins in the first round,” Banario said, “so we expect [him to do] what he wants. I’m preparing my mental strength first.”

“It’s better to strengthen your mentality before formalizing the game plan. Even if you’re in good condition, if your confidence is low then you can’t execute in the Circle. Right now it’s all in the mind.”

Though he has been in a slump lately, Banario is more motivated than ever to face someone he looks up to. And he sees no better way to redeem himself than to defeat Aoki in front of the future hall of famer’s hometown crowd.

“I really want to win because I’m facing a legend,” Banario said.

“I’m really preparing hard for my bounce back and to make a good account of myself against Aoki. I’m excited to test my skills against someone who’s been there since I started training mixed martial arts.”

Can Banario climb to the top of the ONE lightweight division? Find out on 13 October at ONE: CENTURY in Tokyo, Japan.
