Honorio Banario's road to ONE: CENTURY
Honorio Banario faces the biggest challenge in his career in the form of Japanese MMA legend Shinya Aoki at ONE: CENTURY

On October 13th, ONE Championship heads back to the historic Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan for ONE: Century, the promotion’s 100th event. To mark the milestone in the promotion’s history, ONE will be putting together a two-part fight card that features a handful of their biggest stars as well as a number of exciting prospects.

The historic card will also feature former world champions, and one of them will be former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio “The Rock” Banario of Team Lakay.

The hard-hitting lightweight contender hopes to get back on track, but standing in his way could be the toughest test of his career in former two-time ONE Lightweight World Champion and Japanese mixed martial arts legend Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki.

This is Banario’s Road to ONE: Century.

Banario’s MMA career has been up and down, to say the least. After an undefeated run in the local scene, Banario found himself on the international stage with ONE Championship. While his promotion debut ended in his first career loss, Banario bounced back and after one win, found himself challenging for the inaugural ONE Featherweight World Championship against fellow Pinoy Eric Kelly.

Banario ended up defeating Kelly to become the first-ever ONE Featherweight World Champion and became the first Pinoy to hold ONE Championship gold. It would be the biggest win of his career to date, but it would also precede a five-fight losing streak.

With losses to the likes of Koji Oishi, former champion Narantungalag Jadambaa, and former title contender Ev Ting, it would have been easy for “the Rock” to be dissuaded. Instead, Banario bounced back in impressive fashion by racking off five consecutive victories and putting him in the conversation for another shot at the world title.

That impressive winning streak would come to a halt at the hands of would-be title contender Amir Khan, but Banario would be able to bounce back against Rahul Raju.

Looking to continue his momentum, Banario found himself in the quarterfinals of the ONE Lightweight Grand Prix Tournament against Hawaiian grappler Lowen Tynanes. Unfortunately for Banario, the returning Tynanes looked every bit the contender he was before being sidelined by injury and ran through the Filipino en route to a first round TKO win.

In his last bout, Banario fought valiantly but came up short against South Korean Dae Sung Park via Unanimous Decision.

Now, motivated by his wife and a new-born child, Banario returns to the ONE Circle agaisnt one of the most dangerous submission specialists in Aoki. A loss for Banario would send him to a third-straight defeat, but a win will immediately throw him back in contention and give him arguably the biggest win of his career.

Banario and Aoki square off in Part 2 of ONE: Century
