ONE Championship: Is Aung La N Sang the biggest challenge in Brandon Vera's way?
ABS-CBN Sports on Sep 24, 2019 02:49 PM
“This is the biggest test for Vera since he joined ONE Championship back in 2014. This would not be a walk in the park for him."
Vera, the reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion, is scheduled to lock horns with Myanmar's favorite son in the main event of ONE: CENTURY PART II on 13 October at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.
The Kachin State hero believes his activity over the last few years will work for him in this gargantuan of a match-up.
“I fought more in the last year than he has in the last five years,” Aung La N Sang said. “I don’t think it will be ring rust for him, but the nerves leading up to the event [can] affect the person. We will see how he deals with it.”
The 34-year-old is also confident the Filipino-American’s size advantage will not be much of a factor come match night.
“I work with bigger guys, I work with taller guys, and I work with heavier guys than Brandon Vera,” “The Burmese Python” said. “When fight night comes along, size and power are not going to be an issue.”
Nissi Icasiano – Filipino journalist and Asian combat sports expert – echoed similar claims. He believes Vera’s size advantage can be negated by the variety of Aung La N Sang’s training partners at Hardknocks 365.
“He works with some of the best light heavyweights and middleweights in America, so we can really say Aung La [N Sang] is quality,” Icasiano said.
The longtime writer also noted that “The Truth” has not gone out of the first round in all of his four matches in ONE – and that could be a huge factor because “The Burmese Python” is known for grinding his opponents down.
According to Icasiano, this could be the first time the Filipino-American is coming in as the underdog.
“I believe Aung La N Sang is the favorite to win in this match,” the journalist said.
“This is the biggest test for Vera since he joined ONE Championship back in 2014. This would not be a walk in the park for him. We’ll see how much he has left in the tank at age 42.”
