TOKYO, JAPAN - 20 of ONE Championship’s biggest stars shared the stage for the official ONE: CENTURY Press Conference, Thursday at the Park Hyatt Hotel here.
ONE: CENTURY will be Singapore-based martial arts promotion ONE Championship’s historic 100th event, and to commemorate the milestone, ONE will be putting on a massive day of fights across two full-length fight cards featuring 28 world champions.
Headlining Part I of the two-part card will be a highly-anticipated champion-versus-champion rematch between Singapore’s Angela “Unstoppable” Lee and China’s “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan, the reigning ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion. The two will face off for Lee’s ONE Women’s Atomweight World Championship.
“This match, I think everyone has been dying to see, and it’s going to be a completely different fight,” said Lee, who is looking to avenge her March loss to Xiong. “I’ve had an amazing preparation, I’ve just been able to push myself harder than ever, and I really feel like I’ve had to go through everything this year in order for me to grow as a martial artist.”
“I’m grateful for that, I’ve learned from it, and I am fully confident that I can defend my belt and show the world why I am the champion of this division.”
“SIx months ago, Angela came up to my weight class and tried to get my belt. I kept what was rightfully mine,” a confident Xiong said. She has the opportunity to become ONE’s first female two-division world champion. “Now, it’s my turn to go down to her weight class and fight for the belt. Just like half a year ago, I will win this match, but unlike the last time, I won’t be leaving without two belts on my shoulders.”
“There is nothing that can stop me this time because I have 1.4 billion people standing behind me,” she added.
Co-headlining Part I will be the Finals of the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix, featuring the Philippines’ own Danny “The King” Kingad of Team Lakay facing off against American MMA icon and former UFC Flyweight World Champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson.
“I’m happy to be back here again and competing in the most important match of my life,” said Kingad. “it’s an honor to be able to represent my country, the Philippines, and I am glad to be here with my Team Lakay family.”
“I am excited to be on the US primetime card, giving me the opportunity to showcase Filipino talent to a bigger audience,” said the 23-year old, who will be part of the card that will be aired live on TNT, Saturday evening in the United States. “I have been looking forward to this, and this is a dream come true to be able to share the Circle with DJ, someone who I look up to, but I believe that I have a chance to defeat him.”
“If I can defeat Demetrious, this will be the biggest accomplishment of my life and my young career, and I believe that I can become ONE Flyweight World Champion,” he added.
“I’m looking forward to facing Danny Kingad, he’s a very young and talented phenom from Team Lakay,” said Johnson. “You guys are in for a treat, I’ve been training hard for this fight, I know Danny Kingad is no joke, it’s going to be a sick fight.”
The Finals of the ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix will also be decided, as ONE Lightweight World Champion Christian “The Warrior” Lee steps in to face Turkish knockout artist Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev
Making his main roster debut on the preliminary card of Part I will be Team Lakay strawweight and ONE Warrior Series contract winner Lito “Thunder Kid” Adiwang, who takes on Japanese champion Senzo Ikeda.
Headlining Part 2 will be another massive champion-versus-champion matchup, as ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera drops down to light heavyweight to challenge the division’s reigning titleholder, Myanmar’s “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang.
“I’m very excited to be here in Japan, competing, very excited to be on the path to fulfilling a life-long dream of mine of becoming a two-title holder in two different divisions,” Vera stated. “Chasing after the light heavyweight title from a man who is a man amongst men, we are cut from the same cloth. He has my full respect and my full attention.”
“This bout means more to me than anything I have ever done in my mixed martial arts career so far,” Vera added.
“I want to thank Brandon for asking me for this bout,” said Aung La. “I’ve been a fan of his since college, since ten years ago, and we’ve been former teammates. Since my bout in Japan, I’ve been training for over six months, so I’ve been preparing very well, I’ve been preparing very hard for this and I hope to put on the best performance of my life on Sunday.”
In the co-main event, former ONE Bantamweight World Champion Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon will look to regain the crown as he challenges Brazilian legend and reigning titleholder Bibiano “Flash” Fernandes.
“It’s an honor and a privilege for me to be part of this event, the 100th event of ONE Championship,” said Belingon. “Getting to compete here in Japan excites me because of the support of the Japanese fans. I’ve trained hard for this one, and I’m 100 percent ready for this one.”
“I’m going to compete with Kevin one more time, I’ve prepared for this, not just 100 percent, but I’ve prepared 300 percent, 1000 percent. I’m ready to bring the fight and give the best fight of the night,” responded Fernandes.
Also on the card, former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio “The Rock” Banario faces the biggest challenge of his career in the form of former two-time ONE Lightweight World Champion and Japanese MMA legend Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki.
