Vera more motivated than ever for matchup with Aung La
“I have a job to do, and it’s a very tall order. He’s a man that you can look to and respect. Ang hirap nun, diba? But I’m game, tara! This makes me excited,” - Brandon Vera

Reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera is, in every sense of the word, a veteran when it comes to mixed martial arts.

The 41-year old Fil-American boasts a pro career that has spanned 17 years, and has some of the best in the world, including the likes of Randy Couture, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, and Jon Jones.

At ONE: Century this coming October 13th in Tokyo, Japan however, Vera is walking into what could be the most important bout of his career when he challenges reigning titleholder “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang for the ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship.

The two ONE Championship stars are set to clash in the main event of the second half of ONE’s historic 100th event, and for “The Truth”, he has never been more motivated for a fight in his life, no matter the mutual respect that exists between himself and his opponent come October 13th.

“It’s no pressure, because I think it’s unnecessary,” Vera told ABS-CBN Sports. "The way that I already think, admire, and feel about Mr. Aung La, the two-division champ, everything else, is just extra.”

Vera has long made it known that he has had his targets set on the ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship, and it just so happened that it was Aung La, Myanmar’s MMA hero, that was holding the title.

Back at ONE: A New Era in March, Vera made it official by stepping inside the circle and challenging Aung La for the title.

Vera himself acknowledges the magnitude of his matchup with the two-division titleholder, and sees this as his biggest test so far.

“The only fight that I can think of, the only event, the only match I think that can compare to how I felt or how motivated I was, and it’s not even close, was when I got to compete against Shogun in LA, at the Staples Center,” the former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight recalled. “This is bigger to me than that, so I don’t need any more motivation.”

Winning the light heavyweight crown is the task at hand for Vera, and at this point, it really doesn’t make difference where the fight takes place. The people at ONE however, know just how big a matchup it is, and did well enough to put in on as the final attraction of a day-long offering at the historic Ryogoku Kokugikan.

“I don’t care where we’re at,” Vera stated. “I think it’s really awesome that it’s in Japan, I think it’s really awesome that it’s the 100th event, I think it’s really awesome, all of his extra stuff, but for me, it’s Aung La N Sang. It doesn’t matter. We could be here, there could be a stage, kahit diyan lang.”

“I have a job to do, and it’s a very tall order. He’s a man that you can look to and respect. Ang hirap nun, diba? But I’m game, tara! This makes me excited,” he added.

Vera has enjoyed success since coming over to ONE, but the Singapore-based promotion's heavyweight king sees becoming a two-division titleholder as the last ring to grab, so to speak, before he thinks about finally hanging the gloves up for good.

"That, I would say, would be the beginning of the last half of my career," Vera said about becoming a two-division titleholder. "I have a goal in mind, I know what I want to do before I’m retired, I know what I want to do before I’m ready to go."

"I’m not ready to go yet, but I know what I want to do before I go, and I’ve never had a path, I’ve never had a direction before so, parang super excited na ako, because it’s even more motivatiing," he concluded.
