TOKYO, JAPAN - A cloud of uncertainty has hovered over ONE Championship’s upcoming historic 100th event, ONE: Century, set to take place this coming Sunday, October 13th at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Hall here.
Super Typhoon Hagibis is expected to make landfall over Japan this coming weekend, and as people brace for the strong winds and rain that the super typhoon is expected to bring, a number of major sporting events set to take place over the weekend have already been cancelled.
The impending arrival of Super Typhoon Hagibis, expected to make landfall in Tokyo by Saturday, has prompted people and the government to take the necessary precautionary measures. Train systems will be suspended while some establishments are also expected to cease operations that day.
The concern has also affected a number of major sporting events that have been scheduled for the weekend.
The Japanese Grand Prix has already cancelled their Saturday activities, and the same goes for the on-going Rugby World Cup, which has two scheduled fixtures on that day.
Fortunately for fight fans in Japan and all over the world, ONE will be pushing through with their scheduled two-part mega card.
ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong made the announcement on his social media platforms.
“I am thrilled to announce that ONE: Century will proceed as planned for both Part 1 and Part II on October 13 in Tokyo,” said Sityodtong.
He added that weather is expected to be back to normal come Sunday.
“My leadership team and I made this decision with safety as the highest priority for our team, our athletes, and our fans. I also received expert input from key stakeholders and knowledgeable locals in addition to getting real-time satellite updates on the typhoon. By early morning Sunday in Tokyo, the weather should be back to normal.”
Sityodtong also noted that fans who would be unable to make the event due to transportation or travel issues will be given a full refund.
ONE: Century is set to become the Singapore-based promotion's largest event, with two eleven-bout cards set to take place on the same day.
Five Filipino fighters will be competing at ONE: Century, led by title challengers Brandon Vera and Kevin Belingon.
