ONE Century: Mark Sangiao's tireless routine to keep his Team Lakay athletes sharp

"It won’t get any easier, but with the way they are working and [with] their determination, I’m confident that we’ll bring back victories for the Philippines." - Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao
Overseeing a band of warriors was never meant to be an easy task. It does not get any easier when those martial artists are highly competitive World Champions strutting their wares on the global stage.
But that is the kind of life Mark Sangiao lives for. The renowned head coach of Team Lakay eats, drinks, and breathes martial arts on a daily basis.
Far more than being a coach, he also serves as a father figure to his athletes.
"Being a coach is not easy, but because I have mutual trust with my athletes, it somehow makes it more comfortable to move and make decisions for the team," Sangiao said.
"That’s the key — just keep the team tight and remain hands-on."
October has been a buzz saw for Sangiao as four of his athletes are slated to compete, and another one just recently finished a tough match.
Kevin "The Silencer" Belingon, Danny "The King" Kingad, Honorio "The Rock" Banario, and Lito "Thunder Kid" Adiwang are set for big matches in the historic two-show event ONE: CENTURY on 13 October at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.
The 39-year-old bared that though he hung up his gloves ten years ago, he still joins his athletes during training sessions to stay sharp.
"I join the team during workouts, and I also keep up with the drills we do during training to stay fit," Sangiao shared.
"I make sure to review all the past fights of our athletes and their opponents to make sure I don’t miss certain details. Their development is very important because we know exactly how we’ll strategize – especially with the level of competition we’ll be facing."
Ending 2018 with four ONE World Champions in its stable, it has been an up and down year for Sangiao and Team Lakay. They are left with ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua "The Passion" Pacio as the lone titlist from their camp.
With the largest martial arts event in history right around the corner, Sangiao is confident that they can pick up the pieces once more and make a return to the pinnacle of the organization.
"I always remind them to treat every match as if it’s their last match. They have to win to stay in the race," he said.
"It won’t get any easier, but with the way they are working and [with] their determination, I’m confident that we’ll bring back victories for the Philippines."
Sangiao’s star athletes will compete at ONE: CENTURY, the biggest World Championship martial arts event in history.
