TOKYO, JAPAN - Team Lakay's Kevin "The Silencer" Belingon of the Philippines came up short in his attempt to reclaim the ONE Bantamweight World Championship after getting submitted by reigning titleholder Bibiano "Flash Fernandes in the second round of their co-main event bout at ONE: Century Part 2, Sunday evening at the Ryogoku Kokugikan here.
Belingon came out aggressive early, throwing hard kicks to the legs. Fernandes uncorked a few kicks of his own but ultimately decided to bring the fight down to the ground, where he is at his best.
On the mat, Fernandes remained in control as he slowly worked towards an arm-triangle choke, but Belingon was able to escape the submission attempt and survive into the next round.
Fernandes shot in early and scored the takedown once again in the second round, and was able to ultimately latch on to Belingon's back, which spelled the beginning of the end for the Pinoy challenger.
With one of the best grapplers in the world locking him up from behind, Belingon found himself in an undesireable position as Fernandes locked in a deep rear naked choke, forcing the Filipino to tap out within moments.
The stoppage time came in at 2:16 of the second round.
With the win, Fernandes likely closes the book on his storied rivalry with Belingon.
