American mixed martial arts star Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson added another title to his already-long list of accolades, defeating Filipino rising star Danny “The King” Kingad in the finals of the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix to secure the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Championship at ONE: Century Part 1, Sunday morning at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.
Johnson, the former long-time UFC Flyweight World Champion, outgrappled the talented Kingad for three rounds to win via Unanimous Decision and make it a perfect 3 for 3 since coming to ONE.
Now, Johnson moves just one more win away from achieving his goal of becoming a world champion in ONE after it was confirmed that he was next in line to challenge reigning ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes.
“DJ for Adriano Moraes for the World Championship,” announced ONE Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
First things first for Johnson however, is some time off after competing three times in 2019.
“DJ says he want to rest, he said it’s been a very exhausting year, so let him rest, let him enjoy, then we’ll get back to the drawing board but I would expect maybe March of next year, maybe earlier,” Sityodtong said.
Johnson himself expressed his desire to take some time off before making a return in early 2020.
“I’ma take some time off, and if I can pick and choose, I want to fight maybe February or March, just give my body a chance to relax, get my health to where it needs to be and the start training and get ready then.”
Moraes is coming off a unanimous decision win over Geje Eustaquio to reclaim the ONE Flyweight World Championship, his third title run in ONE.
