The reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion defends his gold against Rene "The Challenger" Catalan in ONE Championship’s final show for 2019 in the Pearl of the Orient Seas.
On paper this showdown looks like a battle between youth and experience. However, according to former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard "Landslide" Folayang, Pacio might be younger but he has more experience in mixed martial arts.
“What Catalan will bring is his experience, but of course this is MMA we’re talking about. When we talk about MMA, Joshua has more fights,” Folayang said.
“On the amateur level, Catalan is more experienced. He’s a World Champion in wushu – there’s no doubt about that. But for me, I’m with Joshua on this one. Both of them are wushu artists but Pacio grew up in MMA, Catalan merely adapted.”
Catalan – who is 40 years old – is a World Champion and an Asian and SEA Games gold medalist in wushu. He started his career in The Home Of Martial Arts with a 0-2-1 record, but has then won six-straight bouts.
In his latest outing, “The Challenger” did what no athlete was able to do – he defeated former ONE Strawweight World Champion Yoshitaka "Nobita" Naito by way of technical knockout in the first round.
The win catapulted the Catalan Fighting System representative to contender status, but "Landslide" believes that his former teammate from the Philippine Wushu National Team still has a lot left to prove in mixed martial arts.
“This isn’t wushu, it’s MMA. Of course, we’re favoring the reigning champion because he’s proven it already. Rene will only try to prove himself in the world of MMA,” Folayang said.
“It’s different in MMA. Joshua has proven himself already because he’s already a champion. Rene is a challenger.”
