I think everyone wants to fight [Demetrious Johnson], and actually, that’s my dream. If you want to ask me about my dream match in ONE, that’s my dream match. I want to fight the pound for pound king," - Lito Adiwang (Photo courtesy of ONE Championship)
After an impressive run in ONE Warrior Series and an even more impressive debut on the main ONE Championship roster, the future is looking very bright for Team Lakay strawweight Lito "Thunder Kid" Adiwang.
The 26-year old debuted on the biggest stage of them all, ONE: Century in Tokyo, Japan last October 13th and came away with a first-round TKO victory over Pancrase champion Senzo Ikeda.
Adiwang's win proved to be the lone bright spot for the Filipino contingent in Tokyo, and it even caught the attention of ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
Now, expect the newest Lakay on the block to get a bit of a step up in competition in his next bout. Adiwang himself says that he's ready for anyone.
"We have a lot of tough and good opponents in the strawweight division, but for now I’ll just wait for ONE Championship to give me who’s next, but I will keep on improving and preparing myself," he said. "Anybody they’ll throw at me, I’ll prepare for it. I’m ready get a win again."
Adiwang has campaigned on getting back to action as soon as possible, angling for a spot on the Masters of Fate card in Manila this coming November 8th.
While Adiwang maintains that he's just waiting on who ONE throws at him next, the up-and-comer already has a dream fight in mind. When asked who he'd like to face inside the ONE Circle more than anyone, it was none other than one of the sport's absolute best.
"Actually I’m looking at a higher [weight class], I think everyone wants to fight [Demetrious Johnson], and actually, that’s my dream," Adiwang revealed. "If you want to ask me about my dream match in ONE, that’s my dream match. I want to fight the pound for pound king, and I just saw him fight, and I’m visualizing myself competing with him, and I’ll work hard to make it happen one day."
Johnson, of course, defeated Adiwang's teammate Danny Kingad on the same ONE: Century card to take the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Championship and now is the number one contender to ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano Moraes.
Obviously, Adiwang's focus remains on his division, the strawweight division, but he's just letting it be known that he would be ready to jump up to flyweight if DJ needs an opponent.
"For now, I’ll try to focus on strawweight, but if opportunity comes, like if they’re going to give me DJ, then that’s a very big fight. I can go up," he said.
