With a martial arts career spanning nearly two decades, Rene "The Challenger" Catalan has been through a lot.

From being a World Champion in wushu and a gold medalist in the Asian and Southeast Asian games, the 40-year-old is certainly familiar with success.

He is also no stranger to failure.

Despite his successful background, his transition to professional mixed martial arts had a rocky start as he went 0-2-1 in his first three bouts in The Home Of Martial Arts.

“When I lost three straight, I accepted it. I was a newbie in MMA. But every time I compete in a sport, my goal was to become a World Champion. I felt like losing early was normal because I was just starting,” Catalan said.

“On fight cards, it was totally normal to open in the prelims because I was just starting. But I told myself that eventually, I will be in the main event.”

The Ilonggo certainly walked the talk and is now bannering ONE: MASTERS OF FATE where he challenges Joshua "The Passion" Pacio on 8 November at the Mall Of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.

To get there, the founder of Catalan Fighting System needed six straight wins, and it certainly was not easy.

“I was just dreaming of it. Now I found a way to train properly. Back then, I didn’t have a proper training camp and I was also coaching in other countries. That’s why it didn’t end up well,” Catalan said.

“I doubled on training and I worked on my wrestling and striking. I just worked hard. God always provides for our daily needs during training.”

“It’s just a matter of discipline, determination, and dedication, alongside our passion with what we do.”

Catalan believes his hard work and lifelong training will come together on 8 November in Manila.

A winner all his life, he will stop at nothing to end up on top once more.

“I declined at first, but I know how big of an opportunity this is. I’ve worked hard for this,” Catalan said.

“I won’t waste this opportunity because I know things like this doesn’t come often.”
