Filipino mixed martial arts star and former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio has a chance at retribution when he enters the cage at ONE: Masters of Fate this coming Friday, November 8th at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Manila, Philippines.
Eustaquio faces a familiar foe in Finland’s Toni “Dynamite” Tauru, a man who had handily defeated him back in 2016. Then looking to complete a hat-trick in the bantamweight division, Eustaquio faced a taller opponent in Tauru, and wound up getting submitted in the first round.
That loss would effectively send Eustaquio back down to the flyweight division, as it would prove to be his most optimal weight class, as punctuated by his world title run in 2018.
Nearly three years after their first encounter, Eustaquio and Tauru run it back, this time in the flyweight division. Once again, ONE Championship’s ‘Rematch King’ finds himself in another sequel.
“Sa akin, it's easier in a rematch because you already understand things and then na-feel mo na yung opponent,” Eustaquio explained during the official ONE: Masters of Fate open workouts, Tuesday afternoon. “It's a matter of adjustment and taking advantage of yung mga positions or yung mga skills na kailangan mo during the fight.”
In his career, Eustaquio has won three rematches - not including third fights - against Anatpong “Mak” Bunrad, Kairat Akhmetov, and Adriano Moraes, and he hopes to make Tauru his next conquest. The former interim and undisputed ONE Flyweight king believes that he has improved by leaps and bounds since their first matchup back in 2016.
“If you're going to look at me back in 2016, it's way different,” said Eustaquio. “It's a big thing, those three years. I've developed, I've gained the Flyweight World Title two times, so it's really different from before.”
More than just getting a win over Tauru back, Eustaquio is looking at this fight as an important one to be able to get back on track and back to the top of the division. The 30-year old native of Baguio City is coming off back-to-back losses, with the most recent being his first-ever KO loss.
“Sa akin, every fight is important with me, because I dedicate a lot of time, I sacrifice a lot of things during the training camp, so for me, every fight is very important,” he expressed.
“And this one, I should really [take it seriously] because I really want to get back into the winning circle and [end 2019 with a bang],” he added.
