MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Team Lakay's Joshua "The Passion" Pacio survived an early submission scare to rally back and score a submission of his own, forcing challenger Rene 'D' Challenger' Catalan to tap out to an arm-triangle choke in the second round and retain his ONE Strawweight World Championship in the main event of ONE: Masters of Fate, Friday evening at the Mall of Asia Arena, here.
An early scramble on the ground saw Pacio and Catalan both going for heel-hook submissions, with Catalan holding on longer. Pacio eventually escaped and managed to control the veteran on the ground for the rest of the opening round.
In the second frame, Catalan shot in for a takedown, only to be stuffed and reversed by Pacio, who was abel to transition into mount.
Once in mount, Pacio then locked Catalan in an arm-triangle choke, ultimately forcing the tap.
The official stoppage came at the 2:29 mark of the second round.
Pacio successfully defends his ONE Strawweight World Championship for the first time, and improves to 15-3 in his MMA career.
Catalan sees his six-fight winning streak come to an end, and drops to 6-3 in his MMA career.
