Ramon “The Bicolano” Gonzales is a firm believer that second chances do not come often, particularly in the fast-paced world of mixed martial arts.

Given a chance to make amends, the 32-year-old Karateka vows not to disappoint when he takes on “The Wolf of the Grasslands” Hexigetu at ONE: AGE OF DRAGONS on Saturday, 16 November at the Cadillac Arena in Beijing, China.

The pair were originally scheduled to meet  at ONE: DREAMS OF GOLD last August before the match got shelved after Gonzales failed the hydration test.

Thankful that he was given a chance by ONE Championship to face his original opponent, the red-hot strawweight is out to repay the faith given to him by the organization.

“I am excited that I have been given another opportunity by ONE Championship – I feel blessed,” Gonzales said.

“I was so disappointed with myself the last time. It was a really tough time for me as an athlete, but I always take that kind of situation as a challenge.”

For Gonzales, the cancellation of their first bout emphasized the importance of losing weight in a healthy manner, given ONE's strict policy in ensuring the safety of their athletes through hydration tests.

“I’ve learned a lot. I am now making sure that when I lose weight, I am still healthy. I must always take those factors, like hydration, into consideration.”

In a sense, the postponement of their first bout turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Kyokushin Fight Academy standout

Given an extra four months to study his opponent, he is much more familiar now to his Chinese foe.

“The cancellation of our bout gave me more time to review his previous matches and to learn more about him because I knew I was going to meet him again in the future,” Gonzales said.

“I know that Hexigetu is a dangerous opponent and I have no plans of being complacent against him,” he added. “But I am eager and determined to win this because this is a second chance that was given to me by ONE.”
